This time of year, you might find yourself in the self-care section of Harry Race or White’s Pharmacy looking at the numerous products that could provide relief from your aggravating allergy symptoms. During your over-the-counter scavenger hunt, you may run across the homeopathic section. The practice of homeopathy is based on the principle that the body is capable of curing itself and two products to consider for the allergy season are Rhinallergy Kids and Sinusalia.

Rhinallergy Kids is a non-drowsy and quick-dissolving tablet. It helps to temporarily relieve one or more of the following symptoms: hay fever, allergies, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, runny nose, scratchy throat, and nose. The active ingredients are allium cepa 5C HPUS, ambrosia artemiisiafolia 5C HPUS, Euphrasia officinalis 5C HPUS, Histaminum hydrochloricum 9C HPUS, Sabadilla 5C HPUS, and Solidago virgaurea 5C HPUS. Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS) following the active ingredient indicates high quality, safety, manufacturing, and testing. Allium cepa 5C HPUS relieves allergic runny...

Your body temperature can be measured in many places on your body. The most common ones are the mouth, the ear, the armpit (axillary), and the rectum. Foreheads are also accurate and commonly measured.

Normal body temperatures vary from person to person –average body temperatures:

· ORAL: 98.6 F (37C)

· RECTAL 99.6 F (37.5C)

· EAR: 99.6 F (37.5C)

· AXILLARY: 97.6 F (36C)

· FOREHEAD: 97.6-97 F (36 C)

Body temperatures are usually lowest in the morning and higher later in the day. In most adults, a fever is an oral temp above 100 degrees F. Your child has a fever if he or she:

· Has a rectal or ear temp of 100.4 F or higher

· Has an oral temp of 100 F or higher

· Has an armpit temp of 99 F or higher

Keep in mind that an armpit temperature may not be accurate - if in doubt use another method to confirm the results.

Friends and Community Members: Like many of you, we have spent the last few days and weeks hearing and learning about the coronavirus (COVID-19). We have been intently trying to understand how COVID-19 affects our employees, customers and our community as a whole.

We want to assure you that we are following the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines and recommendations on the steps we can take to help prevent the spread of the virus. Many of you have heard over and over the same statements: Practice Social Distancing, Wash Your Hands Often, Do Not Touch Your Face, and Cover Your Cough. All of these are explained in more detail on their website: I would encourage you to be familiar with the specific details for each of these items as well as the information on how the virus spreads.

As always, White’s Pharmacy, Harry Race Pharmacy and Harry’s Custom...

Let’s examine what we know: Coronaviruses (CoVs) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERSCoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to human and MERS-CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans. (Bats are carriers we do know that)

On 11 February 2020, the WHO (world health organization) finally decided to name the virus as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the disease caused by this virus as COVID-19 (for Coronavirus disease identified in 2019).

There is some evidence that a mask may reduce the exposure of others if an infected person...

THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM:The endocannabinoid system influences nearly every bodily function. Without endocannabinoids, many normal processes begin to go awry. Not long after the first cannabinoid was isolated from the cannabis plant, scientists discovered the human body produces similar substances. These endogenous (naturally occurring in our bodies) cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids, are neurotransmitters that perform a wide range of functions in the human body. From regulating pain to reducing anxiety, cannabinoids and their receptors play a huge

CBD is an abbreviation for Cannabidiol, a chemical compound found naturally in the cannabis plant. It is not mind altering like marijuana. CBD will not make you high. Over the past 40 years, there have been numerous studies that highlight the potential benefits of CBD and how it can support the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

Every mammal has an endocannabinoid system (ECS) with receptors...

What are some of the hot health terms you are reading about today? Is it your gut flora? Inflammation? The power of sleep? All those are in the news and on our minds. Just what does gut flora have to do with our health? Well, the feature product for this month is a product called Just Thrive. At the natural products conference we were able to talk first hand to the folks behind this company and did we learn a lot!! Just what makes this probiotic different from everyone else has everything to do with what kind of organism it is--to begin with its a spore. This means it doesn't degrade in our stomach but gets further down to our intestines where it can actually become therapeutically effective!

HUMAN: These strains originate from a balanced human gut microbiome. Being derived from a healthy human underlines that these specific bacteria are safe, effective and natural to our gut health.

GUT COMMENSAL: A microbiological categorization, “Commensal” means beneficial. These four strains bring benefit to...

brain armor.png

This past fall Dirk and I were able to attend a conference full of ecofriendly, environmentally sustainable, no animal testing natural food and supplement products. While there we found a product that we were especially excited about – Brain Armor! With an aging population and increasing information on sports relates brain injuries, brain armor is filling the demand for natural health products focused on brain health.

What is BRAIN ARMOR and what does it do?

Brain armor is an Omega 3 fatty acid formulation to promote healthy brains! Brain armor is a clinically proven, evidence-based nutritional formulations designed for the sole purpose of building strong, healthy brains through improved structural integrity and enhanced cognitive performance. People with low omega 3 levels have a 10-fold higher risk for sudden cardiac death compared to people with high omega-3 status.

Higher Omega 3 fatty acids have been correlated with larger total normal brain volume and hippocampal volume in aging populations, suggesting reduced risk of the normal brain...

Dirk and I were recently able to attend a conference full of ecofriendly, environmentally sustainable, non-animal tested, natural food and supplement products. We were inspired by so many of the products there and the stories of them - the "WHY" they were created and the passion behind them.

One example is a new product that we now carry from the natural products EXPO “SNOOOZE.” The creator found himself suffering from a lack of concentration that he attributed to a lack of sleep; upon further research and support from a lot of friends and family who were also suffering he came up with a combination of herbs that has been helpful for many folks. Its Ingredients include sleep inducing herbs: Passion Flower, Valerian, Lemon Balm and Lime Blossom.

We all know sleep is important. It strengthens your immune system, improves cognitive and physical performance, and ultimately elevates your mood and boosts creativity. Studies even show it helps with weight/appetite control. SNOOOZE is a food supplement that you drink 20-30 minutes before bedtime and...

flu shot

Nobody likes to get sick, and it’s even more frustrating when it could have been avoided. One of the best ways to avoid getting certain infections is to get vaccinated against them. This is especially important for children, older adults, and other people with immune systems that may not be at their full strength.

Two of the most common sicknesses that can be prevented with vaccines include the flu, and certain types of pneumonia. A study by the CDC estimates that over 200,000 people are hospitalized with the flu each year, and over 500,000 people visit the emergency room each year for pneumonia.

The flu is a constantly changing disease that often changes from one flu season to another, which means that last flu season’s vaccine often will not be effective for the next season. The flu shot does not cover every strain of the flu, however it covers the most common strains that effect most people in any given flu season. The flu season generally starts around October and goes through the end of February, but in some cases can as late as May, so it’s not...

How many of us truly understand what happens to the body and brain with addictions? I attended an eye-opening conference in May on substance use disorders that gave me additional insight into the physical basis of substance use disorders. The conference opened with speakers providing information

on the changes in the brain that occur with addiction. Sessions highlighted how people with substance use disorders are NOT choosing to continue their lives this way, but changes in the addict’s brain chemistry make it very challenging to get free of addiction. When addiction occurs physical changes take place in the chemical pathways in the brain and body and receptors also change in quantity and quality. Even genetics begin to change over time and with continued generational addiction we are making it harder and harder for our future generations, our children and grandchildren, to be able to adequately

combat this disease. In other words, addicts can’t simply just “get over it” or simply “move on.”

We also learned that fear of withdrawal is the biggest...

Many of us have had some sort of addiction touch our lives, whether it was in our own history or the history of a loved one. I recently attended a five day APhA Conference on Substance Use Disorder in Salt Lake City Utah and I learned that none of us are alone in the ways addictions touch our lives but I also learned how little so many of us truly knew about it. At the end of each day we attended an Alcoholics Anonymous or an AA meeting, then Narcotics Anonymous or NA meeting, and finally an Al-Anon meeting. Many of us knew what AA and NA were but very few of us knew that Al-Anon was a support group for people that had loved ones suffering from substance abuse disorders and helped participants navigate through the grief, anger, self-blame, and other complex emotions that accompany having a loved one suffering from addiction. Many stories and tears were shared and connections between participants were strengthened. One of the biggest messages we carried away from our five days was no one is alone in this.

Each day the conference provided additional insights...

An essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled, usually by steam or water, from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other parts of plants. Most are clear, but some are amber or yellow. They are inhaled and applied to the skin through massage or baths.

Because the essential oils are so sweet-smelling, many people suppose their value is essentially one of charm and fragrance, but this is a mistake. Modern scientific research has proven that essential oils are potent, with remarkable medicinal properties. These substances are very complex in their chemistry, and very powerful.

Examples of essential oils and their uses include:

  • Lavender—addressing stress, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, and depression
  • Geranium—calming and balancing for stress, PMS, and menopausal symptoms
  • Ylang-ylang—sensual, exotic fragrance, calming irritability, anxiety, and anger
  • Clary sage—relaxing and balancing for emotional and hormonal conditions
  • Roman chamomile—calming, and helpful with menstrual cramps and stomach aches, pains,...

Walking down the vitamin aisle can be daunting. With hundreds of options, how do you know which to take? The answer is: It depends. Your body has different needs at each age. Here’s how to select the right vitamins to support your health at every stage of life.

Age: 20s and 30s. Getting plenty of bone-boosting supplements like calcium, magnesium and vitamin K is important because your bones don’t reach their peak mass until your late 20s to early 30s. The CDC recommends that women in their child-bearing years take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily to support a healthy pregnancy.

Age: 40s. Omega-3 fatty acids can help fight the inflammation and cognitive decline that begins after age 40, according to The Arthritis Foundation. A high-quality fish oil can also keep your skin glowing and strong. Opt for oil from wild-caught fish that have tested negative for mercury.

Age: 50s. Because bone loss accelerates once you are in your 50s, it’s essential to supplement your diet with vitamin D and calcium. The...
